Preacher
Jesse Custer is a hard-drinking, chain-smoking preacher who, enduring a crisis of faith, becomes infused with an extraordinary power. He embarks on a quest to better understand his new gift and literally find God, alongside his trigger-happy ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and new vampire friend, Cassidy.[1]
Preacher
Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer is accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis, the infant of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. The incident flattens Custer's church and kills his entire congregation.
Luther Seminary and Fortress Press are launching a new book series called Working Preacher Books. We believe that God uses good preaching to change lives. Our books will help preachers make the Bible come alive every time they preach.
Brent A. Strawn focuses on the importance of honesty in preaching, especially around three challenging Old Testament themes: sin, suffering, and violence. He makes the case that preaching honestly about these topics is critical in the church today. Without honesty regarding them, there is no way forward to reconciliation, health, and recovery. He frames this work specifically for working preachers, to help them speak to these thorny themes with depth and clarity.
Preaching the Headlines reframes preaching as an ongoing conversation between the modern world and the world of the biblical text. Preachers use what they know about life as a bridge to the text, while life in the text provides the bridge back to faith in the contemporary world. The goal of the book is to provide a process to aid preachers in doing theological reflection on the everyday world as an integral part of sermon development.
In Writing for the Ear, Preaching from the Heart, Donna Giver-Johnston teaches preachers how to communicate effectively--how to get away from their notes and make a more personal connection with their listeners. Grounded in a theology of the incarnation, she offers a step-by-step method for writing sermons with the fewest, most impactful and memorable words and delivered by heart to communicate a message that captures the ears and hearts of listeners.
Walter Brueggemann shows Christian preachers how to consider the faith witnessed in several Old Testament traditions and to help them discover rich and suggestive connections to our contemporary faith challenges. He claims that sustained engagement with the Old Testament is worth the effort for the preacher. This volume is part of the new Working Preacher Books series designed to provide timely and compelling books on biblical preaching. God uses good preaching to change lives.
These videos will be viewed by a panel of gifted and experienced preachers for feedback and coaching. Approximately 20 of the submissions will be chosen as semi-finalists to receive special training and support. The semi-finalists will be invited to Pepperdine's beautiful Malibu campus for a two-day workshop in February where they will receive more coaching from a team of preachers including Jeff Walling, Randy Harris, Mike Cope, and other gifted Bible teachers. They will not only coach the students in presentation skills, but they will encourage them in their pursuit of a preaching ministry career.
The Next Gen Preacher Search is open to all high school juniors and seniors as well as undergraduate college students (ages 16-22). You do not need to be a Pepperdine student, and you do not need to be a religion or Bible major to enter. Experienced preachers will review all the submissions and provide constructive feedback.
Muscular strength and hypertrophy following resistance training may be obtained in different degrees depending on the approach performed. This study was designed to compare the responses of the biceps brachii to two preacher curl exercises, one performed on a cable-pulley system (CAB; in which a greater torque was applied during the exercise when elbows were flexed and biceps shortened) and one performed with a barbell (BAR; in which greater torque was applied when the elbows were extended and biceps stretched). Thirty-five young adults (CAB: 13 men, 5 women; BAR: 12 men, 5 women; age = 24 5 years) performed a resistance training program three times per week for 10 weeks, with preacher curl exercises performed in three sets of 8-12 repetitions. Outcomes measured included elbow flexion peak isokinetic torque at angles of 20, 60, and 100 (considering 0 as elbow extended), and biceps brachii thickness (B-mode ultrasound). Following the training period, there were significant increases for both groups in elbow flexion peak torque at the 20 (CAB: 30%; BAR = 39%; p = 0.046), 60 (CAB: 27%; BAR = 32%; p = 0.874), and 100 (CAB: 17%; BAR = 19%; p = 0.728), and biceps brachii thickness (CAB: 7%; BAR = 8%; p = 0.346). In conclusion, gains in muscular strength were greater for BAR only at longer muscle length, whereas hypertrophy was similar regardless of whether torque emphasis was carried out in the final (CAB) or initial (BAR) degrees of the range of motion of the preacher curl in young adults.
Regardless of what motivates you to consider this opportunity, we hope you will consider applying to be the student preacher for this year. To apply, please submit your sermon manuscript to the Rev. Bruce Puckett by Friday, January 20, 2023.

One night, a couple brought a newborn to the church, the Preacher was performing his duties when the infant was possessed by a demon. However, it was too powerful and ended up possessing the preacher. With the demon inside of him, the Preacher killed everybody in the church. By the time the police came, the demon had abandoned him and he was arrested for murder. The Preacher was sent to Blackfield Asylum where he hears the demon inside calling for him. One day he had a visitor, Calypso, who said that he ran a contest and if the Preacher won, he would reveal the truth. Hoping that God would welcome him back, the Preacher enters the contest. 041b061a72
