This exquisite brand paved the way for the Japanese whisky revolution. Previously a subject restricted to hardcore whisky drinkers who wanted to try something different away from traditional Scottish whiskey, Japanese whisky is now a subject all by itself. And Yamazaki sits firmly at the top as the best example of just that.
Cocktail recipes: An Old Fashioned made with Japanese whisky is lighter and slightly sweeter than one made with Scottish whiskey. To make a Local Old Fashioned, add all ingredients into a mixing glass and muddle to break down the sugar. Stir once or twice, add ice and stir again. Then, strain into an Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice and stir one final time before garnishing and serving.
Whiskey is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Different grains are used for different varieties, including barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat and corn. It is one of the world's most popular drinks and accounts for approximately 35% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. When you buy whiskey online, you can find varieties from all over the world including Japanese, Canadian and American whiskeys.
The world of whisk(e)y is wide - it is distilled in over 20 countries including Scotland, Japan, Ireland, United Sates, Canada, Taiwan, Sweden and India. There are a seemingly infinite number of different types of whiskies and whiskeys throughout the world, but there is one unifying trait: they are all distilled from any number of grains including barley, corn, rye, and wheat, and generally aged in wooden casks.

I couldn't get to book the distillery tour with tasting (1000 Yen) as it seemed all sold out until the end of December. However, I booked the museum tour which says it is free but with paid tasting. Can I still pay 1000 yen and avail the 3 types of whiskey tasting or is it a different more expensive tasting?
It's different--you'd be ordering flights of whiskey from the bartender in the museum atrium and paying there. My son did this after we'd done the tour and tasting (separate room from the atrium) and I'm sorry but I don't know what he paid at the bar for these additional flights.
@Deweegi - I wondered if the museum bartender is okay to serve those 3 component whiskeys (what they give after the distillery tour) for 1000 Yen.. lol.. Jokes apart, I just read that it is about 500-800 yen per tasting at that museum bar.. :(
@travelwiz13 - Right. Actually, that is what I assumed too. Well, the museum bar just seems too expensive according to what I read today! I really really want to do the 1000 yen tour but the online thingi says it is all booked/taken until the end of this year! Like you said, I really hope a few cancel it on the day so that we (2 of us) get a chance! Did you buy anything there? How is the single malt priced?
Japan's first commercial whisky distillery, Yamazaki, began production in 1924. Since then, Japan has earned its place among the great whiskey producing cultures of the world. Broadly speaking, Japanese whisky is most similar to Scotch with a focus on single-malt and blended-malt styles but Japanese whiskey sets itself apart with creative and artistic interpretations within these categories, all while maintaining a diligent respect for tradition.
Scotland is a fairly small country, and yet the diversity in her whiskies is astonishing; there is a Scotch whisky for every possible occasion and palate, with food or without. Each of the hundreds of working distilleries in Scotland produce a distinctive spirit, and often more than one of the five types of scotch. Single Malt, Single Grain, Blended malt, Blended grain, and Blended scotch, are the five types of scotch whisky. 90% of all scotch consumed is in the Blended category (Johnny Walker, Chivas Regal, Smokey Grouse etc), but the most famous and sought after category is the Single Malt, which consists of whiskey, distilled in one season, from malted barley, grown on the same grounds where it's water is sourced, where it is then fermented, distilled, aged and bottled. The single malt taxon is split up into the well known regions which give scotch it's terrior: Highland, Speyside, Island, Islay, Lowland and Campletown.
